I have an old MF 185 backhoe that I have to cut up to extract a rusted foot(ground support). It is made out of a 1/4 box with 3/8 wrapped around the bottom, or 1/4 top thickness and 5/8 bottom thickness. Being it is a backhoe support, is gas welding out? With gas welding I am assuming I would not have cut a V in the metal just to re-fill with a rod.
Would a 1/8 7018AC rod with 70,000 PSI strength do the job with a Lincoln 225 or Hobart 235 welder work better? Being I would have to buy the welder what is the advantage to a AC/DC vs. just AC unit? Is it worth the extra $200 for the DC? I see the DC rating is lower than the AC, so with DC I am assuming it would be easier to weld sheet metal without burning a hole?
