I would say if you plan on having the welder to use it a lot DC is the way to go. AC welders are fine and will do the job but DC is smoother and gives better penetration in direct current electrode positive (DCEP) switch the leads for DC electrode negative (DCEN) and you will have a less penetration for your jobs on lighter metals.
I would also recommend buying an older IDEALARC or DIALARC used. You can probably get one for 400 bucks and will beat the pants off a smaller buzz box.
For your weld on your loader. Use a 6010 or 6011 if on AC for the root pass as they are better with "dirty" steel and give deep penetration, then chip and brush and use a 7018 over that. 7018's do not handle dirt well. 6013 is another good general purpose rod, easy to use and good with thinner materials.
