trailer - surge brakes

Reading lots of good advice on trailer towing here the last month! I've been lurking on that topic... So, I ran across a 16 or 18 foot trailer (6,000# I think) with hydraulic surge brakes, actuator on the hitch. Are these good? Are they good enough? I'm looking for something to pull behind my Dakota for now, lighter loads of 'stuff' from area auction sales. Dakota rated for ~5,500#, I'd not want to get to that limit really... I like the idea of this type of braking, self-contained, but would like to hear thoughts on it from people who know? My state allows most anything unlicenced for farm use, but would this be something I can take down the freeway licenced with a 3/4 ton in the future? --->Paul
