Rick B. makes a good point. I never had any much experience with trailer brakes until I built a farm trailer for hauling firewood down some steep log roads behind my farm tractor. I used a narrowed mobile home axle with the "puck" type actuator. I pulled the drums, relined the shoes, packed the bearings and got everything working the way it's supposed to. I couldn't believe how simple they are and how well they work. My old tractor has been converted to 12V and I hooked up one of the old-style K-H brake controllers. I tested it on a macaddam road with about a ton of stone first just to make sure I wouldn't get myself in trouble in the woods. I can skid the tires easily on blacktop even with a full cord of oak firewood. I had considered building a surge type brake before I stumbled on this mobile home axle. I am completely sold on electric brakes now.
