There are two different field coil wiring systems used in generators, both 6 and 12V. 1 the external ground system means the field coils recieve power from the third brush in a three brush generator or the hot brush in a 2 brush generator. The other field coil lead is externally grounded through the voltage regulator. If you jump from the battery terminal to the field terminal on this system it will short full battery current through the regulator and burn it out. 2 On the internally grounded system one lead of the field coils is grounded internally to the generator case and the other lead recieves battery power through the field terminal from the voltage regulator. This type would not be damaged by jumping from the battery terminal to the field terminal. You should find instructions in a shop manual for your generator type to properly polorize it.
