Larry, I think you are correct. I dont think I have ever found a Delco generator that did not have an external ground field. I belive the Ford/Autolite generators were the internal ground field type. With the prestolite and Lucas generators, I dont know. I am sure that somone else with good knowledge of these units will post the answer.
