Polarizing a 12 Volt Generator

Help! I'm confused. I have seen on one of these discussion boards that you need to hook a jumper wire from the battery terminal of the regulator to the field terminal for a couple of seconds to polarize a generator. On the instructions I received with a new 12v regulator, it states to hook a jumper wire from the arm. or gen. terminal of the the regulator to the battery terminal on the regulator. It goes on to say "Do not touch Field terminal! Regulator is ruined instantly." Does it make a difference if it is a 6v generator verses a 12 volt? I have both 12v generator and voltage regulator. Thanks
