OT Computer Question

I moved up to a newer computer that has Windows XP. I always shut the old one down when I wasn't using it. The guy I got this one from said to leave it run all the time, it is hard on it to restart all the time. Does it make a difference? I always figured it you weren't using it, shut it off.Any thoughts?
