Sounds like the ball on the bottom of the shifter is worn and slipped out from whatever gate/fork it was riding in. Might even be a worn shifter pattern.

I'm not a MF guy.. but if this were a ford.. you take the top of the tranny cover off, make sure all gears are in neutral, and then lower the cover back down with shifter in neutral.. assuming the shifter ball is good / has been repaired.
