MF50 transmission lever locked in position

How do I free the shifter lever it self. I was able to slide the gear forward from reverse to 1st gear using a long screw driver through the trans fluid fill plug hole and return the tractor to the garage, but the shifter lever is locked in a semi-reverse postion (not quite reverse and not quite neutral).
