How do I free the shifter lever it self. I was able to slide the gear forward from reverse to 1st gear using a long screw driver through the trans fluid fill plug hole and return the tractor to the garage, but the shifter lever is locked in a semi-reverse postion (not quite reverse and not quite neutral).

Slide the rubber boot up the shaft; push the roll pin (may be a solid pin) out enough to clear the shaft; CAREFULLY lift the shaft and manipulate it into position (whatever gear the tractor is actually in); replace roll pin and boot.

Tried doing exactly as you mentioned removed the boot and pin tried pulling striaght up to free it but the lever is locked into place and will not come free and I fear breaking something by attempting to force it free.

Sounds like the ball on the bottom of the shifter is worn and slipped out from whatever gate/fork it was riding in. Might even be a worn shifter pattern.

I'm not a MF guy.. but if this were a ford.. you take the top of the tranny cover off, make sure all gears are in neutral, and then lower the cover back down with shifter in neutral.. assuming the shifter ball is good / has been repaired.
