4020 converting it to a 12 volt system

A mechanic told me that you could change the solenoid on the starter to a twelve volt one. He said that you could leave the starter alone and just change the alternator. I'm not so sure this will work with a positive ground starter. Also how big of a battery do you need to run a twelve volt system.
