I converted a 24v 4020 to 12v. You do need a 12v starter as the original is an isolated ground and needs 24v. It would be like using a 12v starter on a 6v system.
I used a 12v starter and an alternator. For batteries I used the original 12v batts hooked up in parallel. A little rewire of the lights at the switch and it was ready to run.
