If its 24 volts its diesel and there's a 12 volt positive ground system and a 12 volt negative ground system. They are tied together by a 24 volt generator (or maybe a 24 volt alternator if an air conditioned cab) and a 24 starter.

If its gasoline its 12 volts already, positive ground with a generator.

I suspect your mechanic isn't really familiar with the 4020 24 volt diesel electrical system.
