Converting H to 12 volts

Can I convert my Farmall H to 12 volts by using a 12 volt generator and voltage regulator from a different tractor? If I switch to a 12 volt coil will I still need the resistor? Other than changing the light bulbs will I need to change any thing else? I want to use a generator instead of a car alternator because they look better on a tractor. Do you have to polarize a generator to make it negative ground?
