Can I convert my Farmall H to 12 volts by using a 12 volt generator and voltage regulator from a different tractor? If I switch to a 12 volt coil will I still need the resistor? Other than changing the light bulbs will I need to change any thing else?

I want to use a generator instead of a car alternator because they look better on a tractor. Do you have to polarize a generator to make it negative ground?

You can get "true 12-Volt" coils that don't need a ballast resistor. Just be sure that's what the kid at the suto parts store actually sells you.

Get a 12-Volt (-) ground generator and regulator from a late 50's to early 60's GM vehicle.

Polarize it before starting the engine, jut to be safe!

Howdy Lincoln,

If you decided to convert the H over to 12, it shouldn't be very hard. I have done this before (a long time ago) with several M's and a few H's. Only difference was I used the alternator because it was a lot easier, and fit into the plans for the customers and family a lot better. Don't forget about the starter. You will need to convert it also or it will not last very long once you start using it. Good luck with your project.

Jim

6-Volt starters work just fine on 12-Volt conversions, as long as cranking time is kept within reason.

Bob is correct, there is no issue with the original 6v starters running on 12v. They may last longer due to the fact that they start the tractor more rapidly and often are used less. Many late Farmalls had 12v systems so the most stock parts can be IH. They are for sure Pos ground. If you go Neg ground, a different Neg ground reg is needed. but the gen can be repolarized to Neg ground. Bulbs must be changed in the lights. One other item is the light switch. If it was an early H with a three brush generator, the light switch had 4 positions LHDB These were for the charging system, Make sur that the field wire is not connected to the light switch if using a regulator.
Bob M who lerks on this site has very nice diagrams. Good luck JimN

Dear Lincoln,
If you go negative ground, the negative side of the coil should go to the distributor in order to keep the spark plugs firing at the correct polarity.
