timing injection pump

I have a Massey Fergusson 500 crawler with a V-8 perkins engine. I need to time the injection pump but someone has changed the crankshaft pulley and replaced it with one that has timing marks. The original did not have timing marks but had a pen that screwed out from the crankcase and entered into a hole in the back of the crankcase pulley when the crankshaft was in the correct location to time the pump. Any body got any suggestions on how I could time it without the correct crankshaft pulley. The manual says it can be done by observing the position of number 1 cylinder valves.
