I have a Massey Fergusson 500 crawler with a V-8 perkins engine. I need to time the injection pump but someone has changed the crankshaft pulley and replaced it with one that has timing marks. The original did not have timing marks but had a pen that screwed out from the crankcase and entered into a hole in the back of the crankcase pulley when the crankshaft was in the correct location to time the pump. Any body got any suggestions on how I could time it without the correct crankshaft pulley. The manual says it can be done by observing the position of number 1 cylinder valves.

I'm presuming that this is a four stroke diesel engine. If that's the case, it had to be more that just locating a pin through a hole in the crankshaft pulley to get the timing since the cylinder goes through a compression stroke every other revolution of the crank shaft. You must have to also observe the valves on #1 cylinder to make sure they were closed to assure your self they were on the compression stroke. If there is a diesel shop near you, go talk to them about your problem and they might be able to gibve you some good advice. Otherwise you'll have to know the valve timing relative to the injector opening and put a degree wheel on the crankshaft pulley, and find TDC on #1 to determine where to start. Good Luck.

What model is it?

I have a V-8 perkins workshop manual or two, and will look, if I know what I'm looking for.

Bob the Perkins engine I was referring to is a V8.540.
