kinda OT ATV question

Bought a old honda big red atc. It runs good, but smokes. Someone ran it for some time with no air filter. Anyhow, I know with old tractors sometimes you can get away with just new rings. Im wondering if its the same with these 4-stroke atv's? Im thinking if it runs good with the current wear in the cylinder, the cylinder cant be so bad it needs a bore...Can it? I just hate to sepnd $150 on something I only paid $125 for.
