Bought a old honda big red atc. It runs good, but smokes. Someone ran it for some time with no air filter. Anyhow, I know with old tractors sometimes you can get away with just new rings. Im wondering if its the same with these 4-stroke atv's? Im thinking if it runs good with the current wear in the cylinder, the cylinder cant be so bad it needs a bore...Can it? I just hate to sepnd $150 on something I only paid $125 for.

You can probably get by with rings if the cylinder does not have a lot of taper from top to bottom. In a tapered cylinder the ring has to open and close constantly and looses its tension like an old worn out spring. I would bet if you just put new rings in it the thing will run just like new and not use any oil. I have done it lots of times. Good luck.

Well, I took it apart. No major scrapes or damage to be seen. But Its slightly out of round. If it were evenly worn I would definately try just rings, but I cant imagine rings seating with a slightly oval shape. Thanks for the tips guys.

It"s quite possible you can just get away with rings--the Honda 185/200/250 engines were arguably the toughest engine ever put in an ATV, and I"ve seen dozens of them that just needed a quick hone and a ring job to restore power and reduce smoking. On the flip side, don"t be afraid to stick a bit of money in it--you"ll have a machine quite capable of lasting another 20 years and still being worth at least what you paid for it.

I had a dirt bike one time that i just bored out and new rings. The air cleaner wasnt working right and sucked in dust and dirt. It wore the clyinder so bad that it was knocking from piston slap and had to be rebored in just one day of riding in a dirty inviorment. Dust is abrasive. It just depends on how much it has seen.

It's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it. Most likely the cylinder is worn oversize to the point that new rings won't seal it up.

OTOH, if you've got the time and a hone to clean the cylinder up, ya can't break it any worse by trying it...
