You can probably get by with rings if the cylinder does not have a lot of taper from top to bottom. In a tapered cylinder the ring has to open and close constantly and looses its tension like an old worn out spring. I would bet if you just put new rings in it the thing will run just like new and not use any oil. I have done it lots of times. Good luck.
