Shelf life of battery

OK, Engine was not spinning fast enough to get running also would only have enough "oomph" to spin it slowly for about 30 seconds. All connections seem good and tight. Went to TCS and picked up a battery, Manufactured date was Sept of 2005. Put battery on charger for a day and put it into tractor today and still get same result. Should I be looking elsewhere or should I take battery back and ask for a refund. BTW, it is 30 Degrees here as I write this so it seems like I should be able to get things running. It is a diesel.
