What kind of tractor/diesel? Does it have glow plugs in cylinders? Manifold heater? Auto preheat timer relay? Injector timing retard? What kind of fuel are you using? Look back in archives and you'll see various hard to start diesels that started after proper cold start drill used. Some makes and models need extraordinary help- early Mercedes owner club advises drivers to stick hair drier into aircleaner and run for 5 minutes before trying to start in cold weather, responses post back as 'it works!'. I posted cold start drill for a IHC350 last year for someone- next day post back was it started 1st try when done right, had run battery down trying to start improperly. You note that the engine starts OK when warm, trouble at less than 40 degrees, that implies reasonably good starter and basic wires- may not have a good cold start preheat relay or you're not waiting for a 'start' light to flash. Brother got a cheap diesel car at auction because it wouldn't start when decased owners relative tried to demonstrate that it ran- no $1000.00 opening bid. Outbid scrap dealers $200.00 bid, get in car, turn key to 'cold start', wait a minute for the 'heating' light to go out and 'start engine' light to flash, engage starter 3 seconds and engine fired/ran. Gets 45 MPG, but extreme cold is hard to start. What does the manual say? RN

At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p
