Just a diesel won't cut it. Is it a lawn tractor or a D9. You keed to make sure your new battery meets or exceeds the manufactures requirement for cold cranking amps for the engine you have as previously stated. If you've done that your starter may be draging or pulling to many amps for some other reason and you need a qualified mechanic to check it. That being said I think it would be wise to plug in the block heater anyway....Good luck
