If everybody who DOESN'T need a 1 ton pickup ISN'T driving one, two things will happen.
#1 Demand for fuel will go down along with prices.
#2 Demand for big trucks will go down along with prices. Its hard to get a base model big truck now because of all the yuppie fools driving them. There are 10 midsize to big SUVs or pickups in the parking lot where I work now. NONE of them carried more than one person to work today. NONE of them is even dirty...
If those people each drove 15 miles to work today they've burnt a gallon of gas each and will burn another on the way home. Thats 20 gallons today and 100 gallons this week, 5000 gallons this year. My car gets 28mpg so if I had a 15 mile commute I'd have burnt just over a gallon roundtrip. 10 of my car would be 10 galons today, 50 gallons this week 2500 gallons this year. Thats just one office in one industrial park in one state. Biodiesel and ethanol both help farmers directly by using their produce. Biodiesel in particular can run in any diesel engine with minor modifications. Vegetable oil can also run in most diesel engines straight in the fuel as long as its warm out. Adapt or die thats how the world is. The farmers that seem to do the best are the ones that are following that. I know a guy in Maine who grows organic herbs, he produces about 1/2 what he used to but charges 4x the price and people are clamoring for his product.
