Here is a crazy thought. Five dollar a gallon gas will be good for the USA in the long run. It will make alternative fuel like alchol and bio disel competative. It will force the majority of us to buy sensible small cars. It will make alternative car technology more atractive. Imagine if all of us drove an electric hybid cars getting 50 mpg using ethanol. Our dependence on the middle east countries would be gone, we would be free. This would be painful now but in ten years we will be laughing. We are currently fighting a war largely because of the need for middle east oil. I would rather go through the pain of changing how we use energy than continue to fight wars. The USA is the tops when it comes to developing technology so I know we have the ability. We just need to want to do it.

And Deere, and IH Case, and... in reply to Duane H, 09-01-2005 09:57:32
Why bother with hybrid combines and tractors, since they haven't started building them yet, and jump straight to learning a lesson from Star Trek. Maybe we could start beaming ourselves around for the cost of a few AAA hydrogen hybrid batteries in our green or red beamer phaser things that will double as photosenthesis tractors and combines that will tractor-beam the crops into the ground and then to the grain elevator then to the table or whatever.

DOH!!! The Deere guy hasn't got them in stock yet, maybe are on back order. Sure hope the mortgage guy laughs and understands that now, let alone ten years from now.

Who needs a 50MPG Yugo, Neon, or the likes when can have a red or green beamer on the belt?

Mark

Going to a small car isn't always the answer to saving money on fuel. I have a 2005 corvette 400hp 5 speed, and I can get 28-30 mpg on the "I" if I watch the gas pedal. I'm convinced that the big auto makers could do alot more than what they are doing when it comes to gas mileage. But then again, I'm from Wisconsin and only eat cheese and think of the Packers. Gotta go, I'm next in line at the pump. Oh boy, up to $3,49. Can't believe when I was younger in 1971, gas got down under 20 cents when I worked at a 76 Union station. Cheapest thing to do was to drive around with your best girl. Craig

Biodiesel and ethanol will still not be competitive - the cost on both has been rising daily along with diesel and gas prices. A gallon of ethanol is about the same as a gallon of gas, so that's up what 50%? in the last 4 months? You must be getting 50% more for your corn? Didn't think so. The Co-ops and ADMs of the world are no different than your Exxons and BPs - they can get more profit so they will. It has nothing to do with the price of your corn or soybeans.

YES YOUR Correct.. I heard that on the market report just today and got so mad!

these MONEY GRUBBING backstabbers!

the cost of ethonal production has nothing to do with anything now.. its PROFIT! PROFIT like the pied piper "follow me follow me!" why dont they stand up and say : we are making enough at the old price so as to produce the product and stay in business. SO we will not play your game brokers! this is the price.. lets live with it.

Everyone keeps saying the war is about nothing but oil, well let me tell ya, if it is, I SURE AS HELL HOPE SO. I am getting tired of paying anything over $1.50/per gallon. If this war was about oil my friend, we would be flowing with Iraq Crude. So far Iraq is not evening in the top 5 exports to this country. Just my 2 cents.

Its just history repeating its self again. In the 70s people started to drive small cars because of the gas prices etc. Then in the last 30 years here comes the big gas hogs again. Now they will probably start out cutting down on the gas hogs and start to really push the small cars. We have been there and done that before and here we go again.

how is that going to best the best interest for the farmer? i cannot use a small hybrid car to pull a hay or cattle trailer. i need a full size pickup to eek out a living and even them the pickup is sometimes too small. could use a 1 ton flatbed diesel. i think we just need to be more effecient with our driving and the ones that can use a hybrid car are welcome to it. also if we could cut the political "red tape" of gas additives emmission standards, that might help some.

Why not drive a large hybrid pickup truck? If you and enough others want one, somebody will build them.

I actually read just the other day where Ford and GM are working together to make some. Seems like thats not a bad idea, easier to hide the weight in an already heavy vehicle. I wonder what kind of mileage they'll get. If they could get 25mpg that'd be pretty impressive. I guess the new Ford Escape hybrid is supposed to get just over 30mpg. Interesting, Dad's old Tracker got 30mpg and the base model Liberty is just under that. The diesel Liberty might even be a bit better.

Well, my 6500 pound '97 Dodge 4x4 3/4 ton diesel 5 spd. gets 20mpg. My 2000 Buick Lesabre will get up to 30 mpg. That Ford Escape hybrid is not very impressive. I used to drive a 86 Ford Escort diesel to work that got over 50 mpg.

The Army is working on a 19 Ton combat vehicle with hybrid diesel electric power. I figure a pickemup couldn't be that much more difficult.

Dang it will you listen for a second?
If everybody who DOESN'T need a 1 ton pickup ISN'T driving one, two things will happen.
#1 Demand for fuel will go down along with prices.
#2 Demand for big trucks will go down along with prices. Its hard to get a base model big truck now because of all the yuppie fools driving them. There are 10 midsize to big SUVs or pickups in the parking lot where I work now. NONE of them carried more than one person to work today. NONE of them is even dirty...
If those people each drove 15 miles to work today they've burnt a gallon of gas each and will burn another on the way home. Thats 20 gallons today and 100 gallons this week, 5000 gallons this year. My car gets 28mpg so if I had a 15 mile commute I'd have burnt just over a gallon roundtrip. 10 of my car would be 10 galons today, 50 gallons this week 2500 gallons this year. Thats just one office in one industrial park in one state.

Biodiesel and ethanol both help farmers directly by using their produce. Biodiesel in particular can run in any diesel engine with minor modifications. Vegetable oil can also run in most diesel engines straight in the fuel as long as its warm out.

Adapt or die thats how the world is. The farmers that seem to do the best are the ones that are following that. I know a guy in Maine who grows organic herbs, he produces about 1/2 what he used to but charges 4x the price and people are clamoring for his product.

Yea, but play with that one further. I generally don't *need* my pickup truck. I could drive a more economical vehicle most of the time. But, I do need my truck some times, so I've got to keep it. If I were to do my commuting in a 35mpg car, I'd save about a thousand dollars a year in gasoline.

Now add in the purchase cost of that second vehicle, the insurance, and the maintenance. I'd be losing money big time to buy another vehicle to commute in.

Insurance is one item that drives me nuts. Why should an insurance company charge me extra for a second car when I can only drive one at a time? We ought to be insuring the driver and his most expensive to insure car, and let second less expensive to insure cars ride for free. After all it is the driver that cuases most accidents not the car.

What about a trailer?
My dad had a Chevy Tracker. 4cyl would do about 30mpg if you kept it to reasonable speeds. It wasn't a super powerhouse but it got along good. It'd pull a 2000# trailer which is plenty for most things. If you really needed a full size pickup a couple times a year why not rent one? I bought my Dakota to pull my tractor from one end of Maine to the other. Sure was handy having it but for $500 I could have rented more truck and saved plenty of cash over the life of the truck.
I use my pickup some at the farm and some to haul snowmobiles. It does 18mpg which is good for what it is but I'm starting to thing the 30mpg Tracker would be a better deal for what I need.

Duane - I assume you are referring to Ludwig's post.
As I see it it would give more farmers a chance to work .... For the love of farming, because as in other farming commodities the farmer gets $1.90 a bushel and the processors get $2.00 a lb.

Then they can pay 10c less a gallon for alternate fuel, when the dust settles.
Watch how other unrelated fuel prices increase (propane, wood, natural gas, hydro) as oil goes up.
As you say how will it be good for farmers.

Why do you think oil was down to $15 a barrel 5 years ago? At that price converting was not economical. As soon as any alternative fuels start cutting into the market you see a massive drop in prices, long enough to wipe out the new upstarts, then we'll see it go up again.

I am with you 100%.I wonder if this is the real end of the low priced oil. I remember the 70's and all the alternative stratiges. When people really cut back on buying, the price fell and no shortage. But,the high prices caused a bad recession and super inflation.

People think that this type of change is just out of the question. But in the 70s everyone was driving large cars getting 10 mpg. Now everyone drive cars getting 30 mpg. Do we really want to go back to large cars with V8 engines and rear wheel drive? I know that some of us have a soft spot for an old vintage muscle car but I am very happy with my front wheel drive V6.

That is what crackes me up. We seen this a long time ago ,yet we did nothing.Guess it shows how much big oil is in charge.
Also how the auto company keep bringing more horse power instead of efficient engines and the fools that buy them.
Been driving hondas for a long time , I guess I can afford the hefty increases with all I saved over the years.

I still say..
"a bushel of corn for a barrel of oil"... quit giving away military hardware, food and medical supplies to oil rich third world countries - let"s trade or sell them!!
Also, since we spent millions freeing Iraq from their villiage idiot, and we continue to spend money bringing those people into the, now past, 20th century... how about "a barrel of oil for every dollar we spent or will spend".
I"m a redneck... but... Nobody in the world cares if Americans live or die and most would like to see us all dead!
America has always been the most generous country on the planet, but the time has come for us to start taking care of ourselves. Amazing that I have yet to hear one member of Congress come up with anything at all to say about fuel prices. But then, you don't bite the hand that feeds ya'.
