OT- GM 6.0 vs 8.1

Guys,
Looking at GMC (can't stand the Oriental-looking Chevy front ends) 3/4 ton,4X4s.Any experience or opinions about the 6.0 and the 8.1.One of our work trucks has the 6.0-plenty of power but I've been told it's a thirsty rascal.Bosses nephew has a crew cab,4X4 with the 8.1,auto and 3.73,and he's claiming 13 mpg.He said it's the about the same as the 6.0,so he figured go for the power.What are you all getting? Thanks
