I have a 2500 Avalanche with the 8.1 engine. The rig has a title weight of 6600 lbs. I write down every gallon of fuel, and last year the average mpg came out to 10.8 overall. That's up and down the road, pulling trailers, driving around town every day, etc. No...it doesn't use any oil either.
My 2500 pickup with a 6.0 will maybe get an average of 1 to 2 more mpg overall. And there's a remarkable difference in power. That 8.1 feels like a big electric motor under the hood...it just pulls without balking.
