Long Term Fuel Storage?

My brother lives and works in the North and the fuel supplies for isolated communities are going in now on the ice roads. This is gasoline and diesel fuel both and the people there usually like to try to have a 16 month supply on hand in case they either have very heavy demand or shipments are delayed the next year.
Is there some sort of product that is added to the fuels to keep them "fresh"? I know that "aged" gasoline deteriorates.
