Block Heater Question

The local power company came out and gave timers for tractors/machines with block heaters, free. So, to be supportive, I put two on my machines I use a a regular basis.
Thought I might just ask your thoughts.

Is having the heaters go on 2.5 hours before I use the machine as good as having it on all the time?
What is the min. time one should be put on? Now I know power must have someting to do with it because one of my block heaters works better than the other.
