You can buy new 350 crate engines from Chevy cheaper than you can rebuild them. Having said that, and having no idea as to the condition of the rest of your '79, you might end up with a decent truck. However, you didn't mention what the gooseneck and tractor weigh. Towing a 3,000 lb tractor and a 15,000 lb tractor are two completely different deals. While a 1/2 ton truck will tow the smaller tractor, you'll need a 1 ton to tow the larger. My experience is that if you really want a decent tow vehicle, get a truck with a 454 or swap one into your '79. 454s are cheap right now and the 454/TH400 combination makes for a very capable and reliable tow vehicle. It's basically a bolt in deal but you must use the larger 454 radiator and transmission cooler.
