Gave up on finding a decent used pickup for a reasonable price. Guy wanted 19 grand for a 2wd ford powerstroke diesel, and it was a 99', had 75 thousand miles on it. Seems to me like buying a used late model truck is a rip off. I think im just going to buy an exploder (explorer), and rebuild my chevy scottsdale's motor. Explorers seem to go real cheap, and they are quality vehicles. I have a 350 motor in another truck that is going to be junnked that was used very little that i am going to rebuild fpr the chevy. Does anyone have any experience with these motors. My old man says i should put a comp cam in it, but i dont know much about it. I figure i'll listen to him, cause he rebuild a motor with a blindfold on! Has anyone used one in their tractor hauler? Do ya think a 79 scottsdale with a flat bed and a 350 could handle a gooseneck trailer with an old tractor on it? I don't that much about trucks, i appreciate your advice. Thank you.

I bought a "94" Chev 2500 4x4 Gas 350 with Auto, Air, tilt, cruise, & HD towing package in October 03. It had 221,000 miles on it, a rebuilt engine, & transmission. I now have 246,000 miles on it, & have spent only about $100 in repairs on the blower motor. How much did I pay for it... $5,595! Its paid for, & so far is equal to being the best truck I have ever owned along with a new "93" Model equipped the same way except for the 4wd. If price bothers You! Go for an older model under $10,000. It worked for me!

Bought and sold many trucks over the last 15 years, got my 1992 F250 supercab diesel 4x4 with 230,000 on it and fell in love. Cost me 7,000 with a jasper 7.3, rebuilt trans, and its paid for. I'd only trade it for 4 doors and a manual trans, or maybe a powerstroke.

Yes new truck prices are insane and most used ones (4 years or less). If you look around and take your time you should find some thing good. A year ago in Febuary i bought a 90 F250 regular cab for $4500.00 and ended up putting another $5500.00 into it, bought it form a brother inlaw of a good friend (friends word is all I needed and thought that that type of honesty ran inthe family). Found out later that my friend doesn't have dealing with him, Should of asked first and bought later. Replaced the whole power train except the motor. My son likes the truck and used it all the time. In Feb of this year I went to wire up my nephew's basment and had some spare time ti kill as it was not read for electrical. Found a bargan finder and ended up buying a 91 F250 supper cab diesel for $3000.00. Replced the front rotors, pads, rear drums, shoes, e brake cables, rear cyclindes, all shocks, 2 glow plugs and front fuel take for $800.00. Did the work my self. I have put over 4500 miles on it since and no problems.

Hey,
Yes, new trucks are a total Rip-Off. brand new trucks are at least 30 grand for a plain 1/2 ton.

That's why I rebuilt my '77 Chev Silverado Trailering Special 2 years ago.
I did all the work myself, and it saved my thousands. My total investment was about $3500 and is as good as new. i bought this truck in running order for $700 from my father in law's friend(original owner) for $700 with these parts recently replaced: exhuast, Starter, Altenator, fuel pump, carburetor, winshield, tires, front end, brakes & fuel tank. the interior & powertrain was ecellent. it has 175,000 miles. Never been in accident, All original & well looked after. here's all my costs in parts :

- Parts truck (for Box, Doors, & cab) $200 - radiator (got used from friend $Free - paint, (1 coat primer, 2 coats red, 2 coats clear) $500 - Misc. Body hardware & accecories $100 - Complete engine overhaul $600 - New Drop-in Transmission $450 - Other misc. items & hardware $1000

I rebuilt this truck all myself and I had a decent shop to work in. As far as I'm concerned, it looks & runs as good as it did 25 years ago. It gets 17 MPG. It pulls great. It has a Stock 350 with 4bbl carb. i'm not afriad to to drive it across the country. It's excellent. parts for these trucks are dirt cheap & easy to find. I know it's not worth anthing if I sell it, But I plan on keeping that truck forever.

Good luck,
Rusty

I know this isn't the answer for most folks, but I use a 1961 Mack B-61 and a 1952 Peterbilt to haul my tractors with. Usually pull a 24'tow-behind trailer with 3 axles. Lately I've been hauling a 1952 Hough HA Payloader and 2 1948 Earthmaster tractors to shows with the Pete and 24' trailer. The trucks are both licensed as Vintage Vehicles which is cheap and the insurance is cheap also. This type truck can be had for $5K to $10K if you look in the right place and will haul lots more than you're likely to ever put behind them. A drop-deck or gooseneck trailer would be better but I haven't found one at the right (cheap) price yet. I'm an old-truck nut anyway and love driving these old things, but if you're looking for a soft ride and easy driving this wouldn't be the way to go. I'll try to post a pic on the tractor photos section.

You are getting allot more truck now than in the past. Plus figure inflation since 1970. Four wheel disks, over drive transmissions, smooth ride instead of a bouncing stone boat, air bags, anti-lock brakes, improved crash/fire protection good mileage, entertainment systems to keep the kids from fighting, comfy seats. I tried fixing up a 95 but with inept machine shop and shop work am working on engine #6. Had I known I could have traded for a new 91 at the time. Spent the same money and still had something half decent. Instead of a worn out 95 money pit.

I guess that depends on how you define what you're getting in a truck. I would disagree. What I want is stone-axe reliability and something I can repair myself if it breaks down in the middle of the night out in the middle of nowhere. I have no use for a button I can push that connects me with some operator in God knows where if I lock my keys in the truck. I keep a spare under the hood since I can actually OPEN the hood from outside the cab. I can remember splicing together the headlight harness on a '70 Chevy I used to drive in pitch darkness one night just by feel. You aren't going to do that with anything new. I'd rather replace the mechanical fuel pump hanging on the side of my 350 than drop the fuel tank out of a newer truck to replace an electric one - and I've done both. I never had a DVD player or video games in any vehicle I rode long distances in when I was a kid, and I don't think I suffered because of it. I had books and magazines, and instead of learning how to get to level 37 of Super-Mario Whatever, I actually learned things worth knowing by reading. That's most of the problem with kids these days. They're overentertained so much by rooms full of toys, fourteen cartoon channels, and everything else that when put in a situation where they can't be doing those things, they freak out. Heck, sometimes I even TALKED TO MY PARENTS of all things. God forbid any kid today should have to do that, or any parent have to actually talk to their kid for that matter. Sure, you may get more bells and whistles in a 2004 Chevy than you did in a 1980 Chevy, but I don't think you should be locked into getting those bells and whistles just because one segment of the truck-buying public wants them. I've seen countless '89 and up Chevys that are rusting out worse than my '72. Newer doesn't always mean better.

Lucked into a '91 F350 flatbed dually with a 460 and 5 sp OD, PS, PB, nearly new rubber, clean interior including seat vinyl, (Air out but who cares),straight tin, and new paint $3500. Have had it for 6 months and have had to do nothing other than oil and grease. The oldest boy made the mistake of coming by the house with it one day when he needed some cash.

Very bad (for him) mistake. For once in his life, things were in dad's favor.

Never happened before and probably never happen again.

No kidding on new and used. I priced a 98 3/4 ton cheby with 100,000 at @ 19 grand, no way. 96 dorf 1 ton @ 11,000. I ended up paying 1,000 for an emaculant 85 dorf super duty 250 (8500 gvw) with blown motor. Built a 351w, RV cam, new holly carb and few other optional items. Striped out all the pollution crap. Swaped bed for flat bed, and installed a set of duals. Working on trade to get a goose neck ball setup. All said and done under 4,000 and one heck of a pullin truck. I have hauled 550 gal water (~2 ton). Didn't squat the truck and drove like like nothing was there. Pulled 6 head in stock trailer (~3 ton) and ran 70 down the road no prob. Of course gas milage isn't the greatest, 8-10 mpg, but it isn't for driving to the grocery store. I used it to hual heavy loads.

I have 1976 GMC K25 4X4 with a stroked 350 i.e. 383 whcih put out 400 hp and 430 ft lbs on dyno. Rebuilt the transmission and transfer case and many other new parts for $12,000.00 including cost of the truck. As much or more power than a stock 454 and it is much lighter. I love 70s GMC/Chevy trucks. You can get virtually every part for them from Classic Industries or LMC, or Chevy Duty. If you want torque, and you do, stroke your 350. Check out Speedomotive. GMC has a "High Torque" 383 roller engine for $ 3,900 from Scoggins Dickey, Summit, or Jegs. I would have got one except I still have to pass smog here in the People's Republic of California.

Yep late model used truck prices are HIGH! Just wait a year or so when many guzzlers that are not really needed as trucks go on the market, the prices should drop. Till then keep fixin up the old ones.

I agree, if fuel stays at $2.00 or climbs to $2.50+ (very easily happen) in the next year you're gonna see a bunch of these status symbol heavier pickups (and a lot of 1/2 tons) come on the the market as yuppies dump them for more fuel effiencent vehicles. I can't get over seeing all those 3/4 and 1 ton pickups idling through traffic with bed covers and stage 2 hitches.

I agree that truck prices have gone nuts. I have a 72 Chev 3/4T that I put a chev 402 big block in. Took the 350 out and put the 402 and TH400 in. Not many changes had to be made. The motor mounts (Front)and Trans mount had to be changed. The pwr steering pump has an external tank that works fine. The rest was all bolt on changes. I got the engine out of another 72 that was junked out and I rebuilt it and the trans. I put a .500in lift cam in it, new lifters and and Edelbrock performer manifold and carb. Used the stock exhaust manifolds to make duals. Has plenty of power to pull my Farmal and get 8mpg(Ugh). The only bad part. Has a 4:10 rear end. Needs overdrive. Have been real satisfied with the change. Lots of luck on your decision. My 2 cents.

Norm, you're talking my language. I too have a '72 Chevy. Mine's a 3/4 ton 2wd (C20). She's 34 years old but solid as a rock and drives down the road like a new one - zero play or slop in the front end. It's a plain-jane Custom with heavy-duty coils all around, power-steering and power-brakes - your basic old workhorse. I hauled calves to pasture and pulled my uncle's 30-foot tandem-dual fifth-wheel flatbed with it two weekends ago, and it handle both fine. It has some dents and the normal Chevy/GMC rusted-out rockers, cab corners and mounts, but those replacement pieces are dirt cheap and not too bad to replace if you have some patience and a good MIG welder. Body repair will be commencing in the next few weeks. It's factory black and originally had a 250-6 and TH350 with the Eaton HO52 rear and 4.56s. I bought it nearly a year ago with a reasonably fresh 350 4bbl that had been installed in the six-popper location (the back set of holes). It's still running points and manifolds and never misses a lick, as I keep her tuned up pretty good. The 4.56s were tearing me up for mileage, so last week I installed a Dana 60 with 3.54s out of a 402/TH400 '72 Custom Camper a buddy of mine bought for the body. And yes, the 402 and TH400 are still in his barn with my name on them. The 402 is not going in this truck however, but the TH400 probably will behind a 454 bored and stroked to 496 cid - should be good for around 400-hp and 550 lb-ft of torque or so. In a year or so, I'll probably put a Gear Vendors overdrive in it. A Vintage Air system is also planned along with new paint, carpet, a headliner, spray-in bedliner and a few other goodies. After all that, she'll officially be retired and will be used for cruising, maybe some towing, long road-trips and laying the "smack" down on the ocassional import-driving punk kid that thinks he's lined up next to an old farm truck, lol. I figure I'll have $12,000 or so in it maximum, and will have a classic truck that will outshow, outperform and outclass 99% of the new trucks coming off the line, and for a third the money or less. And it won't be half plastic like the new ones, either.

I agree with Ron. You could probably buy one about as cheap as rebuilding one (if you did it right). If you buy one you will get a warranty with it also. In my opinion a 350 Chevy is one of the most durable engines ever made. We have got one in a one tone 2wd and it pulls our JD 4020 just fine. I aagree with you one the prices of a good used truck. Good luck.

You can buy new 350 crate engines from Chevy cheaper than you can rebuild them.

Having said that, and having no idea as to the condition of the rest of your '79, you might end up with a decent truck.

However, you didn't mention what the gooseneck and tractor weigh. Towing a 3,000 lb tractor and a 15,000 lb tractor are two completely different deals. While a 1/2 ton truck will tow the smaller tractor, you'll need a 1 ton to tow the larger. My experience is that if you really want a decent tow vehicle, get a truck with a 454 or swap one into your '79. 454s are cheap right now and the 454/TH400 combination makes for a very capable and reliable tow vehicle. It's basically a bolt in deal but you must use the larger 454 radiator and transmission cooler.

Ron,

That 454 is not a drop in at all.

In addition to the items you mentioned, the water pump, the altenator mounting, all the belts and pulleys, the dampner, the starter, the motor mounts, the fan, the shroud, fan clutch, fuel pump, power steering mounting, the complete exhaust system and air cleaner assy will all have to be changed.

If the sub does not now have the THM400, then the drive shaft and rear yoke will have to be swapped out as well. If it is a 4X4, then the tansfercase adaptor will be completely different.

Then, when he gets all done, he will probably get around 7mpg.

The only "common" thing between these two setups is the bolt pattern on the bell housing.

Been there, done that.

Allan

I said bolt-in, not drop-in. I've dozens of them are they are as easy as I said. I take engines from donor trucks and swap them in. Of course it uses a different water pump, duh, it's a different engine. The engine and TH400 bolt right in on the stock mounts.

7 mpg my back-side! I get 14 on the highway in mine (K2500), and 11 in traffic. It's all about gearing and a solid tune-up.

Gotta go with the guy up tords the top. I went the pickup route, and while they are handy for different work roles, for pulling and heavy loads, you can't beat a single axle semi truck, and you can pick them up for a song. I have a 1995 White/Volvo with a 430 hp detroit engine, 9 speed transmission, air ride axle, air ride cab, single sleeper ( for the over night trips, or whatever), and that way I can pull an air brake trailer, and if you have about four tractors on there and Mildred and the girls pull out in front of you, you reach up with your left hand, grab a hand full of air horn, bury your right foot on the brake, and you can stop without getting blue hair dye all over your front bumper. I picked this truck up for $7500.00, and the air cond. works, it has power windows, power steering, diesel is about 20 cents a gallon cheaper than gas, and I can haul a LOAD and get 8-10 miles to the gallon and like the other feller said, you sit up where you can see, and you have a ball being a little above everybody else. It's great for hauling hay too. Been the electric brake route, and if you guys ever pulled air brakes, the electric brake trailors would all be sitting in the back of the lot rusting down. You don't have to constantly be changing the adjusment on the brakes from loaded to empty, you just step down and you stop. Speaking from experience, most of it the hard way, Harley

California Diesel, $2.399. California gas, $2.239.
I don't think I could legally drive a semi without a special commercial license. That means going to tractor-trailer driving school for $1200.
