Are you sure you have a solid stud screwed in your filter base? The original tube is "spun" nearly shut at the top, with only a tiny hole left open. This restricts the flow of oil so only a small portion of oil pump flow passes through the filter, and then flows back to the pan. If you do, in fact, have the filter base blocked off with a solid stud, the lack of flow through the filter would slightly increase your oil pressure, but there is a relief valve that would prevent any excess pressure, so the only problem the missing tube would cause would be the lack of any flow through the filter.

You say you have ruled out bad piston rings. How have you ruled this out? If you have good compression, you may still have broken, missing, or improperly installed oil control rings, causing oil burning and smoke.
