Oil flow question

Have an Allis D10. At the oil filter mount, there is a tube that sticks in the oil filter when it is screwed on .Oil flows up this tube into the filter. Evidently, this tube was lost, and replaced with a solid stud, cutting off the flow of oil at the filter.Would this cause the tractor to smoke excessively? Have ruled out rings. Also, what damage could this cause? Thanks in advance, Scott

Are you sure you have a solid stud screwed in your filter base? The original tube is "spun" nearly shut at the top, with only a tiny hole left open. This restricts the flow of oil so only a small portion of oil pump flow passes through the filter, and then flows back to the pan. If you do, in fact, have the filter base blocked off with a solid stud, the lack of flow through the filter would slightly increase your oil pressure, but there is a relief valve that would prevent any excess pressure, so the only problem the missing tube would cause would be the lack of any flow through the filter.

You say you have ruled out bad piston rings. How have you ruled this out? If you have good compression, you may still have broken, missing, or improperly installed oil control rings, causing oil burning and smoke.

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure its a stud, it looks to have been cut off with a hack saw. When I said I had ruled out the rings, I thought that because there was such good compression, that the problem was not here. I'm not a mechanic, but I'm learning a lot. I've sent the head to be redone. When I get it back, and put it back together, I guess I'll find the answer. If the oil control rings are bad, can I replace them without replacing anything else? Thanks, Scott

Better to check the rings now while the head is off. Will only cost you time and maybe a new sump gasket? Later, will mean removing the head again. Could be gummed rings, stuck in the grooves, causing the problem - do you use detergent or non-detergent oil? Not filtering the oil could have contributed to the problem?!
