Calling Nightcrawlers

This is somewhat off topic, but someone on this forum knows something about just about everything, so ... I have experienced nightcrawlers and other worms comming up to the soil surface when I am digging; usually when I am working on a rock that is banging another rock. I have also heard that you can do this with an electric power source, but you need lots of power (dangerous). Anyone know of a way to "call" nightcrawlers that actually works? I need to get worms and other bugs out of some wetland peat (for work, believe it or not). I'll be analyzing these bugs for chemical contaminants, so I can't use any chemicals. (Once when I drained onto the ground the chlorinated disinfecting water from my camper (shame on me) they came up by the hundreds, but I can't, and don't want to use this technique).
