Urgent help needed!!

I finished rebuilding the engine on my Massey Harris 555. Timing, valves and points all set ok. Positive ground system with two 6v batteries in series making 12v right? I was cranking to start, engine cranking slow, so I jumped from other vehicle. After two tries to crank heard a pop and now only the solenoid will click. Engine will turn over by hand. What did I do and how do I check starting system? How do I tow to crank, when I pulled it, the rear wheels locked in all gears. What am I doing wrong?
