No reason you can't jump a positive ground system, so long as the vehicles are physically separated, and there's no chance of metal to metal contact. Just hook the cables up properly to match each system, and connect to terminals AWAY FROM THE BATTERIES. Also can't see a reason why not to jump start a series connected system, as long as the system voltages match. Taking the batteries out, and charging them 'till they're "HOT", as you say, is not without risk of a battery explosion when you're handling them, or reconnecting them. It would be a lot safer to clean the battery posts, or even remove the batteries for a washdown of the batteries and battery box, then put them back in place, and charge them, making your connection at the starter switch or solenoid, to prevent a spark near the battery. I've witnessed 2 battery explosions, and I'm glad they were in their battery boxes, and I wasn't fiddling with the terminals on them when they blew!
