Case VAC Generator operation

I have a Case VAC with a generator with a cut-off (no voltage regularor)and I don't think I see more than 6 volts when the light switch is in the first or second position which as I read is suspose to be generating 8 volts. The generator has two connections one to the ampmeter and one to the light switch. I assume the one to the ampmeter gererates the voltage. Is the one to the light switch a field conection? On measuring resistance from the generation connection that goes to the light switch I do see a resistance with the switch off and no resistance with the switch in the first or second position. How does all this work and what does the cut-0ff switch do? I do have an electrical background so a circuit diagram would help.
