That wiring setup was common to almost all tractors of that era that were 6V with a positive ground. The light switch/regulator is an interesting little device. Sometimes there might seem to be a 4th position, one of mine has a position all the way in (which is really a nothing position) but then slightly out is actually the first position, then two more (halfway and all the way out). Sounds like that switch is working, in the full-in position, the generator field terminal grounds through the little wound resistor in (or on) the switch. I think it should be about 3 ohms. This limits the charge rate to the battery. When the switch is pulled out to the middle position, the resistor is bypassed and the battery receives full generator charge. Your ammeter should show a larger charge when the switch is halfway out. All the way out is the same as half-way out (full charge) except the lights are on so if you're running lights, the ammeter may show slightly less charge than in the middle position. This is a 3rd brush generator and there is an interesting series of articles on them in the "Article" section in the left margin. The charge rate in that generator can also be adjusted by moving the middle or third brush clockwise or counter-clockwise.

A Farmall Story - by Ed Meadors. The year was 1978. Our young family had recently moved to rural Chesapeake, Virginia to a plot of land which would finally allow us to realize our dreams of a huge garden, critters and more lawn and pasture than we would ever use! The answer to our needs materialized in the form of a '44 Farmall A, complete with cultivators, discs, single plow, a 5ft.Woods belly mower and one, mounted spare 9.00x24 rear wheel.
