Another oil furnace question - where's the air come from ?

I've torn this oil heater apart and am learning slowly as to how it works. The control system was totally plugged up and assembled wrong (I think) but hopefully I can figure out all those little adjustments, floats, controls, etc. Meanwhile, I am wondering where the air for burning comes from. I have had trouble keeping the fire going, it just seems to snuff out. The burning chamber seems airtight, just a big tin cylinder with fuel seeping into the bottom (with the little hinged glass door that opens) and I'm wondering where the combustion air comes in. There just doesn't seem to be any place. Oh, I have not yet hooked up a stovepipe to it, could that have something to do with it?
