It's an old devil of a thing, called a Duotherm, made in Michigan. Nothing fancy on it, just a control unit on the back that regulates the fuel level in the regulator and also regulates the flow which sort of drips into the bottom of the burning tub. No fancy igniters or anything, just start it with a little burning paper I guess (through this little door). You mentioned the air in the tub being enough to sustain burning - well eventually it's going to get used up I would think and if the only exit is the chimney, then where does the new fresh air come from? Just can't fugure the thing out.
