Gas vs Propane vehicles - what's the real truth on mileage and costs ???

It's funny, you hear all kinds of stories from guys regarding the milage they get. Unless a guy keeps a real accurate record of all his fuel and mileage month after month, I don't think he really knows what he's getting. Plus, much of what we hear is from guys who for some reason (tailwind, downhill, erratic fill-up, bad math, etc.) got unbelieveable mileage on one tank and that's their mileage. Now, as far as propane versus gasoline, what is the real cost comparison? I know propane sells for less per gallon, but the miles per gallon is probably less than gas is it not? Are there any real documented studies out there that a guy could read that would tell the real story about true operating costs?
