On my two chev 454 powered oliver tractors,I run them on propane only so we replaced the 454 heads with small chamber 366 heads which gave 10/1+ compression ratio and run 36 degrees total spark timing. This along with custom ground camshafts that make maximum torque at 1800 rpm gives a very high torque and economical engine that is governed at 2400 rpm for proper pto rpm. For the on road, dual fuel pickups we use oversize gasoline carbs with the propane mixers mounted on top so the air flow is increased to compensate for less air volume going into the engine when propane is used.We also have used an electronic ignition retard device that retards the timing 6 degrees from the propane setting when running on gasoline The oversize carbs and advanced spark timing help recover some of the expected economy loss of using a lower btu fuel like propane. The fuel tax question has not been a problem. The tax department allows us to estimate the gallons of propane used on road on which we pay fuel tax .
