If you run an engine designed to run on gasoline on propane as a duel fuel vehicle, it will get less mileage on propane. As noted below, fewer BTU's per gallon. Of course if you are filling your own tank at home, you are avoiding the road tax, which will reduce the cost per mile. However, if you redo an engine to run only on propane, it can have a much higher compression ratio and be retimed to take advantage of the propane and reports I read years ago gave about the same mileage as the unmodified engine on gasoline. As someone else noted, a fringe benefit of propane is that it is a clean fuel, meaning the oil, plugs and internal engine parts last many times longer. Hope this help some. I personally have never used propane in an automobile engine but have installed and maintained stationary ones run on propane and some on natural gas.
