I am a failure. for the first time in 115 years, since Jacob and his brothers dragged this farm kicking and screaming from the timber slashings, there no dairy cattle on this farm. I can imagine Dad and grandpa, life long dairy men, spinning in their graves. But at 53, with no wife to support, and no children who would want it, I think the time was right. With the cows gone I may avoid a second back surgery. And to keep milking would have required all new steel in the barn, a new manure auger, a new silo unloader and a lot of work on the chopper. And while dad left us last October, he left us mortgage free and with money in the bank. I know the time was right, but as the last dairy farmer in the family, I can"t shake the feeling I have let my heritage down. Pity party concluded.
