About 10 years ago us Ohio flatlanders were housesitting at Howard,CO along the Arkansas River in the Sangre de Cristo mountains. We got a permit to cut a tree on BLM land, and took our two wheel drive pickup on a lane a couple miles into the forest. Snow was 4-10" deep depending on drifting. Left the truck and walked a half mile to find the perfect tree. Never have I been outdoors where it was so quiet. That's when I realized that if we got hurt, or stuck, we probably were gonna be coyote lunch. Nobody knew where we were - cell phones didn't work there - just the clothes on our backs. But nothing bad happened, and we had a beautiful tree that year.
