Just got a 1980 MF 230 with a 3 cyl Perkins diesel. Bought it at a garage sale from the deceased owners wife and didn't get a lot of information. When I went to pick it up there were some men there that suggested I put a battery in it and start it up. I declined, thinking old fuel and maybe some water in trans due to bad shifter boots.
I think it has set outdoors for at least 3-4 years. The exhaust is routed down which is a big plus. The oil on the dipstick looks like it was changed and never run.
With a gas tractor that's set a long time I'd pull the plugs and squirt oil in the cyls. then remove valve cover to check for stuck valves etc. Then crank with the starter until oil pressure gets the top end lubed.
