1st diesel and it hasn't been run for a few years

Just got a 1980 MF 230 with a 3 cyl Perkins diesel. Bought it at a garage sale from the deceased owners wife and didn't get a lot of information. When I went to pick it up there were some men there that suggested I put a battery in it and start it up. I declined, thinking old fuel and maybe some water in trans due to bad shifter boots.

I think it has set outdoors for at least 3-4 years. The exhaust is routed down which is a big plus. The oil on the dipstick looks like it was changed and never run.

With a gas tractor that's set a long time I'd pull the plugs and squirt oil in the cyls. then remove valve cover to check for stuck valves etc. Then crank with the starter until oil pressure gets the top end lubed.

What's a good procedure with a diesel?

Well, for what it is worth, I helped a friend get a 656 I.H. going after it had been sitting for several years after his father passed away. Put in new batteries and it fired up in just a couple of seconds of cranking. Ran just fine.

With a Perkins, probably as simple as put in a battery and turn the key. Started a combine last year that had a 318 Perkins in it, had been sitting for at least 10 years. I climbed up on top, dropped fresh battery in it. My dad got in the cab and was supposed to crank it while I hit her with either. I gave him the thumbs up to crank, and immediately turned to give it either, but it was already running.

Might be a good idea to crank it with the shut off pulled for 30 seconds to get some oil splashed around before she fires.

Put a battery in it and see if it will start....

You allready said the oil looks good...Diesel Fuel doesn't go bad just cause it's old..

Pull the compression valve then crank it over for about 30 sec. Then check the oil if it still look good then that is OK.
Next open the fuel bypass used for bleeding the fuel system, then crank it again. Check fuel oil comming out. If all is good then close compression valve and start it up.

CHANGE THE OIL and filter, i know of a d-brown that spun a rod bearing, mite have picked up some grit in the pan ..i would get it running a little before changing filters , only because of loosing fuel prime ..but definitly change fuel filters ,before trying to start clean the air filter , found a 800 case with a lot of water in the breather , sure dont want to suck that in the compression chamber , ... all my engines get lucas oil treatment ,any setting motor gets lucas fuel stabilizer, setting trannys will leak , i add a qt of lucas hub sealer

Massey 230 will start right up unless it's different to any I know. Pulled them out of hedgerows and started them right up as if they had been going the day before!

Might get some fuel filters. If there is crud in the tank the filter will clog, the engine will rpm limit. Replace the filter and go at it again. When you get all the crud out of the tank you will quit going through filters. BTDT

Also if you have a 2 stage filter and water bleed, drain the water before you start if there is any.

You could pop the injectors before you turn it over and squirt some penetrating oil down the holes, or use some fogging oil like marine engines use for winter storage. Then spin it over while the injectors are still out which will relieve the cranking compression and also purge your fuel lines of some fuel.

Then put the injectors back in and fire it up....realizing that you will have to bleed the injectors first.

I always like to get some lube on the cylinder walls before I light off an engine that has been sitting for awhile.
