When I can afford it, I purchase my engine oil from the local bulk supplier(Briner Oil in Jonesville, if it matters) in a 55 gallon barrel. It"s cheaper and I"m spending locally. They tell me that their house brand oil, all lubes in fact, meet the same specs as any name brand oil. Theirs is cheaper because I"m not paying for the brand name. Makes sense to me.
I"ve noticed that their oil, fresh out of the barrel, is dark brown. On the occasion that I need to buy Valvoline off the shelf at Walmart, the color is a clear, very light tan.
What accounts for the difference in colors? Both are 10W30 weight, both said to meet same lubricity specs, etc. So why the difference?
