When I was working at a dealership, most independent brands such as NAPA and CarQuest were packaged by Valvoline. I'm sure other parts stores oils were packaged by them as well. Years ago Pennzoil and Quaker State were called "Pennsylvania based oils" and contained more paraffin wax which would build up inside an engine to the point of having to be scraped off with a putty knife when you tore it down. They claim that they are cleaner now and they may be because oil comes from all over now. I still shy away from them though. Heck, for years I ran reprocessed oil in high mileage vehicles and couldn't tell the difference.
